Hi!
I know I promised my next post was going to continue my vampire story, but with all of the celebrations going on I kinda got swamped and didn’t have the energy to write. That is still a bit the case, so Cyrus and the fledgelings are going to have to wait. I have started on a draft but it’s not finished yet, so I just wanted to take it easy this week and tell you a bit of what I did the past few weeks.
First of all, there were a lot of celebrations. On christmas day with my family, and then two Secret Santa’s with my friends (one with my game group and one with my regular friend group). I received a lot of cool presents, and I can’t thank everyone that gave them enough. Then New Year’s Eve I spent with my game group, and we played a lot of board games. One of my friends brought over his boyfriend who lives in a different country, so it also was a lot of fun meeting him (he’s a cool guy).
And I played a lot of D&D. And I mean a lot (at least for me). In our regular saturday sessions we had two Ravnica games back to back (usually we alternate campaigns every week) so we could finish a big arc before the new year. We did finish it and killed the BBEG (the leader of a cult of ancient vampires), but unfortunately also my character. Then we also did a few one-shots because we were all free from school. Someone prepped a winter one-shot where we had to save christmas, or the fantasy equivalent thereof, in a small village, and I played a halfling wizard named Holly (who I had also played last year’s winter one-shot). In the new year I ran a one-shot also set in Ravnica, where everyone played members of the Cult of Rakdos who were sent on a mission to kill a demon. It was a lot of fun, but I did have to prep a lot in a small amount of time, which is also partly why my energy is a bit low at the moment. I also have to prep for the next session of my campaign this saturday, which will take up even more energy.
I watched Disney’s Encanto four times in the last five days. I have to say it is a really good movie. I’m usually not a great fan of the House of Mouse, but damn they know how to make pretty films. I could say that it is very much a fairy tale, but that is to be expected from Disney. I’m also not a fan of their continued portayal of women with large eyes and small hands and feet, and of course the big muscle-y woman has the deep, masculine voice. But they are making progress, and the fact that they do portray strong female characters like Luisa is definitely a good thing. As well as the first female Disney protagonist with glasses, and the people of color. I could say all that, but the movie is just gorgeous. The world and the characters are colorful, and these colors are vibrant. The animation is simply beautiful. All the characters are wonderful and immediately likeable and I love them. Luisa is strong yet also vulnerable, Tío Félix is the perfect hype-man and husband, Dolores is simply amazing, Bruno is awkwardly adorable, and Mirabel always sees the best in everyone. And then there are the songs. The songs! Lin-Manuel Miranda has outdone himself yet again. I was already a fan of Hamilton, and he brings a very similar vibe to this animated feature which is awesome. Yeah, I love it.
So yeah, that’s what I’ve been up to. This week I’ll try to relax a bit more before all the hassle of life starts back up again. Sorry for the missed post, and now for this short one. I hope the next one will be better.
Love,
~ Sanne
