Many currecies are in use all over Aenín. Here is a list of many of the coins used by different cultures.
Common Currency
The common, or Aenían, currency is the one used throughout the land. It was first used by the humans of the Westland, but spread as their kingdom spread. Now people of all the races use these coins.
Crown
The Crown is the principal coin in most of Aenín. It is minted in gold, and printed on one side with a profile image of King Thanebrand II (older Crowns feature previous Kings) and on the other with an image of the Royal Palace in Si-Tahna.
Florin
The Florin is the most common coin after the Crown. It is a coin much used by peasants or farmers. It is minted in silver, and worth roughly one tenth of a golden Crown.
Dime
The Dime is a very small coin, found in almost every pocket in Aenín. It is minted in copper, and worth roughly one tenth of a Florin, or one hundredth of a Crown.
Half-Crown
The Half-Crown is a smaller gold coin, worth (as the name implies) half of a Crown, or five Florins. It is mostly used by merchants. Mages will sometimes use Half-Crowns made of the rare metal electrum for dealings between their own.
Royale
The large, shining Royale is a not often used coin. It is occasionally used by nobles, and sometimes mages, for large purchases. It is minted in platinum, and worth roughly ten Crowns. Instead of the image of the King, it features a large dragonhead on one side.
Elven Currency
Elven coins were once common among all of Aenín, for they were the coinage of the Kingdom of Sylvanion. That kingdom is long since gone, but the image of their currency is still used. Elven coins are used all over the Eastlands, mostly in the elven cities of Taurunn and Ithildris.
Elves prefer silver and platinum as a material over gold and copper, liking their sheen to the moon and stars. Elven coins are usually more polished and even in shape than the rough Crowns and Florins. As it is, elven coins can be used as currency in most cities across Aenin, and many elves accept the common coinage for their own use.
Lune
The Lune is the principal coin of Elven cultures. It is minted in silver, and features an intricate tree underneath five stars on one side, and a stylized moon on the other. In the rest of Aenín, a Lune is worth the approximate of a Florin.
Grande Estelle
The Grande Estelle, or simply Estelle, is a larger coin, second in use in Elven cultures. When used, it is often together with smaller Lunes to exactly count out the amount owed. It is minted in platinum, and features a large, stylized North Star opposite the tree and stars. It is worth roughly one hundred Lunes, and in the rest of Aenín the approximate of a Royale.
Sol
The Sol evolved because of dealings with human civilizations and takes after the Crowns. It is minted in gold and its elven design features a stylized sun opposite the traditional elven tree and stars. It is worth roughly ten Lunes, or one tenth of a Grande Estelle, and in the rest of Aenín the approximate of a Crown (of course).
Currency of the Dune Seas
Although the lands south of the Anadurna technically belong to the King in Si-Tahna, many of the old ways are still practiced in the Valleys of Sand and coins from before the Great Unity are still widely used.
Crescent
The Crescent is the principal coin in the Valleys of Sand. It is minted in gold, and larger than a crown. It features an image of a large crescent on one side, and an image of the Sultan with drawn scimitar on the other. In the rest of Aenín it is worth roughly two crowns.
Minim
The Minim is the smaller subdivision of the Crescent. It is usually minted in brass, and features a small desert star on one side, and two large sand dunes on the other. It is worth roughly the fortieth part of a Crescent, and the approximate of five Dimes or half a Florin in the rest of Aenín.
(A/N: The coins in this section were based on coins from the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis)
Other Coins
Denir
The Denir is a very small, square coin with rounded corners and a hole through the center. It is minted in copper and features almost no decoration. It is made by the nomadic Shunna people of the steppes, and used in their transactions with foreign nobles wishing to buy their horses. For these nobles, one Denir is worth the approximate of an Aenían Half-Dime.
The tribes themselves prefer bartering, though they occasionally use the coins themselves. The hole through the center is used to keep many Deniri together on a string or for easy storage. For large sums of money the square shape is useful for storing the coins in chests.
Chaerian Drachma
The Chaerian Drachma is a standardized unit of currency used by the Southern Federation and many of the traders on the Aegaic Ocean. One Drachma represents a significant amount of money or large stock of goods, such as the inventory of ships, and is represented by a large gold bar stamped with the Federation’s insignia. Most Drachmas approximate a value of a hundred Crowns, or fifty Crescents, though Drachmae with different values have been made. An inscription underneath the insignia always signifies this.
